Everett Smithson Band Bio

The Everett Smithson Band plays an interesting variety of music as well as standards that have a unique spin on them and many delightful originals. Come to any Everett Smithson Band performance and you can count on the band to create a party atmosphere. New Orleans / French Quarter Music is what you will see and hear. Zydeco, Blues, Rockin Roots, Hillbilly Hoedowns, gospel and more....... With the music being very infectious and the playful stage presence, the audience gets connected fast. At ESB Mardi Gras performances--(whenever possible) Everett and Kathy bring a big cauldron of jambalaya -- prepared with their own homegrown garden goods and homesmoked sausage. The song list is unpredictable with songs from Fats Domino, Johnny Cash, Howlin Wolf, Rosie Ledet, Wanda Jackson and Allison Krause -- music from 1900 to the present time. The band consists of Phil Schmid on Guitar, Jeremy Johnson on Drums and the ubiquitous Bill Black on Standup Bass. These guys have played nationally and internationally with big name acts such as Bo Diddley, Lynwood Slim, Big George Jackson, Gary Primich and many others. They have played together for a long time and when they get together on stage they really tear it up with their solid rhythms and red hot instrumentals.

Everett's first band involvement was in 1982. In 1983 his experience playing at the Kingston Mines jam really turned him on to the Blues after which he began a fifteen year involvement with the Alley Katz playing throughout the upper midwest.

Kathy has been playing professionally since the 90"s. She is a self taught musician who spent most of her young life playing a variety of instruments and singing with her sister. Accordion players run in her family and in the late 90s she started frequenting the local jams and sitting in with bands.

The band keeps their sets up tempo to appeal to dancers. Every show is a little different from the song list to the special guest musicians. They have become a popular pick for entertaining at Festivals, Cookoffs, Town Celebrations as well as Bars, Nightclubs and Parties for the past several years.

Some of the Festivals include Bayfront Blues Festival, Summerfest, Upper Mississippi Shakedown, Cedar Fest, Ribfest, Rockbend Folk Fest, Porcupine Mountain Music Fest, Mankato Ribfest, Walker Cajun Fest, Tree Frog Fest, Riverblast Fest, Prairie Dog Blues Fest, and a number of Mardi Gras parties. With male and female vocals, harmonica, accordion, standup bass, it has a very different visual appeal than what most people are use to seeing. Their mission is to keep things upbeat, have fun and make the crowd and bar owner happy!

Their CD "Copperheads and Featherbeds" was released in June '05 and their NEW CD, "Mad Dog" was released in June of '08, and is available for purchase on Amazon, Electric Fetus, Down in the Valley and the band web site. Take The Ride was released June 2010, Time to Go 2013 release, and our most recent CD, Tall Tales 2018.

Everett sounds like he is channeling Howlin Wolf himself and is a talented harp player. Kathleen has clear expressive vocals with an innocent quality she uses to good effect.~~Rich Benson-June 03

This band resembles a cross between the Beverly Hillbillys and Mother Earth and is interesting and refreshing!~~Peter "Bluezzman" Lauro-July 05

They specialize in quick uptempo tunes with a solid uncomplicated back beat and were often in our tempo wheelhouse!~~Allen Hall "Lindy Junky"-June 05
